Blues Basics - Blues Artist Spotlight

NEW to the Blues? Sometimes it is hard for those new to the Blues to explore this journey called the Blues! IllinoisBlues.com 's weekly artist spotlight introduces (or reminds experienced Blues fans) about a Blues artist worth knowing about. So lets start near the beginning of modern Blues. This week we spotlight the biggest Blues legend ever - Robert Johnson.

Many of the greatest Blues songs we hear every day are Robert Johnson's songs performed by other artists.  Songs like Sweet Home Chicago, Love in Vain, Walkin' Blues, Dust My Broom, Milkcow's Calf Blues,  Rambling  on My Mind, Crossroads Blues  and more were all written by this mysterious Blues man named Robert Johnson. To find out more about Robert Johnson, check out the links below.

The website  Delta haze has an interesting bio about Robert Johnson at: http://www.deltahaze.com/johnson/bio.html

All Music Guide has a considerable amount of information and a complete discography of Robert Johnson too! CLICK HERE to read more about this most famous Blues man.

Message From Pat Peterson - WGLT Radio In Normal, Illinois:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Expressing your opinion works! Thanks to you and other Internet radio listeners, the potentially disastrous new royalty rates for Internet music radio have been delayed. In response to public outcry, members of the House of Representatives initiated negotiations between Sound Exchange (representing the music industry) and webcasters, including NPR, representing public radio web casters like GLT. As a result, all parties have agreed to a 3 month reprieve on imposing the new fees. GLT's live music stream and Blues Radio 24/7 are safe for the time being.

It is still very important that you express your concerns about the fate of music on the Internet to your elected representatives. Learn more and contact your representatives at www.wglt.org.

 Blues Reviews of the Week!

This week we feature another of our review series by James “Skyy Dobro” Walker , noted Blues writer and IllinoisBlues.com contributor.  James does DOUBLE duty this week and reviews two CD's by Ted Cash - The Boss Man & Alternative.

Ted Cash
Big Boss Man
Alternative
La Fountaine Records
www.tedcash.com

By James “Skyy Dobro” Walker
BBM: 14 songs; 44:18 minutes; Very Good
Alternative: 10 songs; 43:38; Good

Ted “Big Boss Man” Cash is a versatile singer, entertainer, and writer who is fluent in many styles of music. He brings a rich, deep, and seasoned voice to his songs not unlike that of BB King.

Born to musical parents in Minter City, Mississippi, and raised in Anderson, Indiana, Ted was traveling the country singing Gospel at the age of six. As a young man, Ted had the privilege to sing with such greats as Sam Cooke, Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Billy Preston, and The Mighty Clouds of Joy for whom his father sang bass and played guitar.

Following seven years in the Marines, Ted sang jazz in Hawaii, was a staff writer for albums by Bobby Womack, recorded a successful single “You Are So Wonderful,” lived and performed in Oklahoma and Nashville, and in 1998, located in Las Vegas where he performs and records.

Consisting of 14 cover songs arranged by Ted Cash, Big Boss Man is a tribute to the great blues performers and writers. The CD won Album of the Year for the Nashville Music Awards and still gets airplay. Standout tracks are “The Thrill Is Gone” and “Boom, Boom.”

For original songs by Cash, check out Alternative (Experience Ted Cash). Musically, Cash sings some fine Soul and R&B on songs arranged by Joe Wheeler, Vic Fouquet, Lamont Mills, and Lewis Dandridge. Cash’s formidable voice really shines on “I’m Gonna Keep Holding On.”

If you have not already seen Cash on television or at a Las Vegas function, visit him at www.tedcash.com

We are also feature a review by Ben Cox of the Peter Karp CD Shadows & Cracks

Peter Karp
Shadows and Cracks

Blind Pig Records 2007
Runtime: 44:16

By Ben Cox

Attention all blues fans, this is not a blues record! I repeat, this is not a blues record! I will tell you what it really is though. It’s one of the better Americana releases Blind Pig Records (a more notable blues label) has ever given to the public. Peter Karp has been playing roots music since his early teens. Karp has enjoyed the ups and downs of his career, depending on where “Runaway” Pete would roam. He has one of the more interesting biographies. I highly recommend you find out a little about this guy before you pass judgment on him at all.

On his first international release, Karp conjures up some of the best in American music with his great wit and irony in lyrics that brings up the names of John Prine, John Hiatt, Steve Earle, and Robert Earl Keen to great jam songs reminiscent of “Brothers and Sisters” era Allman Brothers.

Karp really demonstrates his musical ability on the album by switching back and forth between guitars, harmonica, and keyboards in various forms while always giving his whiskey drenched vocals to the tracks. Don’t get me wrong blues fans, there is some blues here. “Air, Fuel, and Fire” shows us some of his West Coast Blues influence with the swing and sway that you’d hear on a Rob Piazza album (great harp, too) to the homage to his influences “Dirty Weather” with special guest Popa Chubby.

Chubby, Dennis Gruenling, and Garth Hudson round out a great cast of special guests on the album. The guests always add just a shade more of layering to Karp’s already thick sounds from his organ and very skilled guitar playing. In fact, Popa Chubby’s electric slide playing on “I Ain’t Deep” a Tom Waits-esque lyric and his electric sitar playing on the title track has shed a whole new light on one of blues-rocks great imitators of others sounds. There is no imitation in any of the work heard here, finally shedding light on some of Chubby’s truly original talent that can go a little unnoticed on some of his releases.

Like I said, blues fans, this one really ain’t all that much blues, but its worth checking out, especially if you’re a John Hiatt or a John Prine fan. This guy is the next generation singer-songwriter you probably have been waiting for.
